Immigration Protests' Best Question
Most concise thought on the recent immigration protests:
"Why would anyone wave the flag of the country that they would never return to--and yet scream in anger at those with whom they wish to stay?"
Update, 4/4: Are they saying, "Don't treat us the way Mexico treats its illegal aliens?

(Please keep in mind that each commenter's opinions are only his/her own.)
Who says all of them would never return to their country? You taking the Lou Dobs approach here? We should cancel St. Pat's and the whole nine yards, eh?
Needless to say, I disagree.
Melting Pot = celebrating our diversity
You live in Chicago, you should appreciate that!

What's the Lou Dobbs approach?
Celebrating diversity, and one's heritage, is fine. I do appreciate that (though I don't celebrate my own much).
Re: "...never return..." If they're here illegally, then they'd have to leave and reenter again illegally. But you're right that "that they would never return to" doesn't phrase it the best. I'd say "that they risked their lives sneaking out of".
But "melting pot" is a blending, a melting together. Which I think is a very, very good thing.
Can you celebrate your heritage and "melt" together? Absolutely. The "melting pot" (as I see it) is adopting, internalizing the things about America that makes it great.
Past immigrants have done both.
I don't know who said this, but I like it: "America needs a new wave of immigrants to love her afresh."
